Milwaukee 5615-24... the best Bang for the Woodworker's Buck
Being an amateur woodworker (and a guy), I love power tools.
I've used lots of brands... Dewalt, Black & Decker, Craftsman, etc.
There is almost nothing that I purchase without doing a ton of research. I don't spend money just because I can, and I'm a pretty demanding consumer.
So, keep that in mind when I say this:
The Milwaukee 5615-24 Router is worth every of the $400 I didn't spend to get it.
Did you catch that?
It's worth $400. But, I did NOT spend $400 to get it.
As for the router itself, every woodworker (hobbyist or professional) should have a Milwaukee 5615-24 1.75-Horsepower Multi-Base Router Kit.
Why?
First of all, I love Milwaukee. It's a great brand. They make durable stuff that is built to last a long time. I mean, who else (except Milwaukee) puts a 5 year warranty on their tools? No one! Hopefully they keep it up, and don't go the route so many other manufacturers are going (China).
Second, the design of this router is amazing. Everything from the depth adjustment to the ergonomic hand grips was well thought-out. The plunger is very easy and quite smooth. The power of the motor is just enough to be effective, but not too heavy.
Third, it's an awesome deal (if you follow the link above), and is certainly the best money you can spend on a router. The FREE shipping is nice too, considering how big this box is... but, even if you had to pay for shipping it's still the best deal on the web.
I do, of course, have just a few minor complaints about the Milwaukee 5615-24 1.75-Horsepower Multi-Base Router Kit.
My first complaint is the size of the case... It's not a huge deal, but they certainly could have made it smaller and still had plenty of room for the router and the base.
My other complaint was the lack of speed control. Also, not a huge deal, but if I wanted to work with some of the larger bits, a variable speed control might help.
My final gripe is about changing the bits... it requires 2 wrenches, which is a pretty antiquated process. I guess if you don't change bits much, it will be okay.
All things considered, this is BY FAR the best router you can buy for the money. You'd be crazy to go with another brand. Milwaukee is the best, and they certainly created a winner when they designed and built the Milwaukee 5615-24 1.75-Horsepower Multi-Base Router Kit.
