The accidental discovery of my insomnia cure...

As a person that suffers from vicious bouts of insomnia, the phrase “sleeping like a baby” isn’t just a phrase. It’s gold.

Like a baby is typically how I sleep when on vacation, but never at home. But, I never knew why.

Until recently.

Some would say that it’s the act of “unplugging” from my normal life, and letting go of the responsibility, stress, and thoughts of work and deadlines.

Others would say that it’s just a removal of all the subconscious psychological anchors around me that “remind” my brain to stay awake.

But, then we came back from vacation. That was when I had a startling revelation.

The wife and I were only gone for a week, and it’s been 3 months since we got home, but I still remember it like it was yesterday. I crawled into the bed, and tucked myself into the delicately soft, refreshingly cool sheets. Instead of just laying in bed, my body seemed melt into it. My entire form was cradled by the smoothness of the sheets.

The pillows weren’t like pillows at all. They were white, fluffy clouds. Clouds somehow plucked from the sky and stuffed into incredibly-high thread-count cases.

When I came home, it was back to staying awake. I would eventually fall asleep if I got tired enough, or took an over-the-counter substance to make me sleepy (think little blue pill).

Then I got to thinking. What if I could recreate some of that magic and wonderment that I experienced when I went to bed at the hotel? Could I do it? The bigger question is, would it actually work?

"The bigger question is, would it actually work?"

Only one way to find out.

I got online and found a place that sells Marriot hotel bedding, but I had never stayed at a Marriott, so didn’t know what to expect on that one. So, I kept looking until I found a place that sold luxury bed sheets and pillows from almost any hotel chain and even a few one-offs such as some of the nicer Vegas casino hotels.

Since the place I was raving about in my description above was the Ritz-Carlton on Amelia Island, I decided to order the luxury sheets and luxury pillows that they the Ritz-Carlton use on their amazingly comfortable beds. I even ordered the Baffle Channel Euro Rest Feather Bed "topper" that sits on the mattress, for full effect.

When the sheets arrived, I was like a kid on Christmas morning. Everything looked so nice! Of course, I had to run everything through the washer first, so I read the instructions on how to care for my new luxury hotel bedding.

While the sheets, pillow cases and comforter was washing and drying, I completely rearranged the bedroom furniture, cleaning and dusting everything in sight. I even reorganized the walk-in closet. My wife thought I was a freak at first, but then she got into the excitement too and started helping. I wanted everything to be perfect.

Then we made the bed. Everything fit perfectly and I wanted to jump in and “cuddle” with my new luxury hotel bedding right away. But, I didn’t. It was only 7 pm. So, we decided to watch a movie and have some hot tea (decaf, of course).

After the movie, we crawled into our “new” bed, in our seemingly new bedroom. The appearance of the bedroom had completely changed due to our rearranging of the furniture, and the feeling of the luxury hotel bedding completely changed the feeling of our king sized bed. It was as if we were back in our hotel room at the Ritz again.

After laying down, I remember talking to my wife a bit, thinking about a few other random bits of the day, and then waking up when my iPhone alarm clock woke me up in the morning. Yep. I slept like a baby... again. But, this time, it was at home!

Follow-up: 3 months later.

It’s been almost 3 months now. Have I fallen back into my old routine? Well, sometimes. Although I still stay up late some nights due to unfinished work, stress or deadlines, it all seems to melt away when I crawl in between those refreshingly cool, feathery soft, luxury bed sheets. Once I lay down, I don’t tend to stay awake long.

Do I think that it will last? I don’t know, but I’m crossing my fingers and hoping that it does. This is the longest period of time I have considered myself “cured” in a long time.
