I received the Brother PT-65 Label Maker for Christmas last year.

Looking back on it, I think that it was my most useful gift I've received in a long time.

Sure, I got some other nice things... things that cost a lot more than the Brother PT-65 Label Maker, but I can't think of a single thing that got more usage than my little label maker.

Back in November, I had read David Allen's book, Getting Things Done, and it inspired me to change a lot things here in the office.

I would have purchased any old label maker myself, but Christmas was right around the corner. So, since I'm notoriously-difficult to shop for, I decided to practice some restraint and drop a big hint to the wife.

Since then, I've used my PT-65 Label Maker to make labels for just about everything in my office.

A lot of people make labels for filing, and I've done that too... that was a no brainer.

My biggest accomplishment, however, was to purchase some tupperware-type plastic containers with lids (I think I purchased close to 50 or 60) to store all of the assorted computer parts that I use in my computer repair business. I labeled each plastic bin for easy locating of parts without having to open each one.

The Brother PT-65 Label Maker can also be used to label boxes and bins in the garage and other storage areas, but I haven't quite made it there yet.

Truthfully, there are a million uses for this thing.

Pros and Cons of the Brother PT-65 Label Maker

Here is a run-down of my pros and cons on the Brother PT-65 Label Maker:

Pros

  • The letters are laid out Qwerty style (like a computer keyboard), instead of alphabetically like so many other label makers.
  • The Brother PT-65 Label Maker is very rugged. I've dropped mine several times, and it never skips a beat.
  • There are a lot of different types of tape (I usually use the more durable laminated tape, although the non-laminated is less expensive)
  • It has the highest resolution printing of any label maker I've seen, and the labels look professionally done.

Cons

  • The Brother PT-65 Label Maker is more expensive than some other brands (but, in my opinion it's totally worth it)
  • It uses 6 AA batteries! Although, I can print A LOT of labels without having to change batteries.

A note to Brother: If you can't make the next model a rechargeable lithium-ion model, go back to the drawing board... in this day and age, people just expect it.

Aside from a couple of minor drawbacks (the higher price isn't REALLY a drawback - I am just a tad frugal), the Brother PT-65 Label Maker is perfect.

Many people have claimed that this label maker has completely changed the way they live (in a good way). If you are on the fence about a label maker, pick up the Brother PT-65 Label Maker. You will not be disappointed.
